Bottom Line

Australia’s 2024 National Defence Strategy outlines a significant increase in defense spending, with a $330 billion investment planned for a more capable Australian Defence Force by 2034. The strategy aims to enhance strategic capabilities, including undersea (nuclear submarine), long-range strike, autonomous, cyber, and space capabilities. However, the 2.4% of GDP allocated for defense expenditure may not keep up with inflation. Additionally, the AUKUS nuclear submarine pact has created a budgetary challenge, and the Australian military faces a recruiting shortfall.
